Dan retired from teaching at Southern Illinois Univ. a few years ago to pursue his studio work. He typically fires porcelain constructions of rural buildings into teapots i.e. such as silos and out buildings. TRAX is representing his more functional work glazed and fired in a wood kiln. He is recognized for his work in popular culture decal icons which he puts on his pot sculpture as well as some of his pots. Currently at TRAX are "despots" and "oil" decals representing, as Dan says, the contradiction of a tryrant looking cherubic on a pot for use. Many of the pots at TRAX are faceted or textured. The glazes are sometimes sand blasted which results in rich and varied surface textures. Dan's current interest, besides the decals, are vases taking on the characteristics of "snowmen" . Their round stately forms are not so much animated, but rather appear stoic in the way a snowman knows he is not here forever, but rather passing through. |
